I've read many articles about wearing the same clothes and how it makes women feel good about it over my morning coffee.
And I realized that the clothes I have now might not be such a good idea when I reach my 50s (which is sooner rather than later, I must admit).
Would I still be happy with my clothing options then?
So that got me thinking…why not prepare myself for the future and read back to this article as a reference.
So for my readers (who I'm sure have not thought about something like myself), I'll do the honors and spare you the torture.
Let's talk about it.
Why Make A Casual Wardrobe For Women Over 50?
Less Work/Effort
I'm sure the idea of having to do laundry every week is not new to you.
(And if it is, then go you for not having that problem!)
This can take a lot of time and be a pain, especially if most of your clothes are black or navy blue.
Neutral colors are used for capsule wardrobe basics, so you won't have to worry about them getting dirty too quickly.
(Another benefit of capsule wardrobe living that I've come to realize)
Fewer Mistakes
It's good to have a few key pieces in your closet.
Fewer mistakes mean less stress, and less stress reduces anxiety.
For example, black skinny jeans are always a good choice.
They are very versatile and look good on people of all shapes and sizes. Depending on the event, you can dress them up or down.
I would also suggest a black dress, a shirt, or a top that is too big for you.
(You can never go wrong with those choices)
To wear a black dress, you can wear flat boots and a brown leather bag.
If you like heels, wear your skinny black jeans and black blazer with heels.
You will look very stylish while wearing timeless clothing!
Maintenance? No Problem!
A capsule wardrobe is a group of staple pieces that can be mixed and matched to make many different outfits.
With a capsule wardrobe, you would never have to worry about rebuying new clothes.
You can't go wrong as long as you keep getting new basics for your closet.
Save Your Money
Your closet will be better put together.
(And you will be spending way less on clothes)
You might even want to look at everything in your closet and consider what you need.
This could help you keep clothes that still look good but no longer fit or suit you from going to waste.
Why not give your old clothes to a good cause?
(Or even sell it at thrift stores if you REALLY want to save!)
Wear What You Love
I know that the word ‘capsule' makes you think you only have a few choices, but this is not the case!
(Yes, we've all thought about this before)
With a capsule wardrobe, you can choose your favorite pieces of clothing, just like what I did for an experiment for work (as a joke.)
You can even put together an outfit with pieces from different closets if it looks good.
Great Choices For Timeless Pieces
Below are great choices for a casual wardrobe for women over 50.
(And really any woman who wears it well)
Cashmere Please
Finding a casual woman's capsule wardrobe without a cashmere sweater would be hard.
(or any sweater for that matter)
The sweaters cost a lot, but they are definitely worth the money.
Instead of cheap sweaters that fall apart after a few years, the high-quality fabric will last longer in your closet.
Also, cashmere sweaters can be worn in many ways.
You can look fashionable in a cashmere sweater, black jeans, and ankle boots.
(And yes, this outfit works really well)
A White Button-Down Top
No matter what you wear with it, a white button-down shirt makes any outfit look super chic.
This nice shirt is a great way to dress up jeans and sneakers that you wear every day.
A Neutral Colored Shirt
A basic t-shirt in neutral colors is a great top to wear.
I personally use it with blazers or tucked into blue jeans.
A basic white shirt is a must-have because it goes with almost everything else in your closet.
(Simple yet can be stylish if worn right!)
Don't Forget A Sweater (Lightweight If Possible)
This is a key piece of women over 50 capsule wardrobe that can be worn in many different ways.
(This is for everyone, as well, mind you)
You can wear your sweater with straight-leg jeans and white sneakers for a casual look.
Or you can also put on a pencil skirt and maybe heels with a light sweater.
A Cardigan For Style
A cardigan can make any outfit look better right away.
It's the kind of outerwear you can quickly throw on in the morning with black pants and a plain t-shirt.
It will make your outfit look like you worked harder on it than you really did.
Straight Mid Or High-Waste Jeans Is The Way To Go
Anyone of any age can wear these jeans. You can wear them with t-shirts, blouses, or button-down shirts.
They are comfortable and look good on most body types. Whether you wear heels or flats, they look great.
And a blazer that fits well makes them look professional and stylish.
A Black Dress (Obviously)
A black dress is a must-have for any closet.
(And one of my favorites)
The most important thing is to choose one that fits you well and always looks good on your figure.
If it doesn't, switch it out for one of a different style or color.
You can wear this piece almost anywhere, so invest in classic styles and shapes that will last for a very long time.
Don't Skim On Accessories!
Scarves of different sizes, colors, and patterns can be used as accessories.
They are a great way to give your outfits more color.
Also, you can wear necklaces or earrings that make a statement but make sure they are right for the event.
As for shoes, wear flats during the week and heels on the weekends.
Also, bring a silk scarf, a wool scarf, a few pieces of jewelry, a tote for the day, and a clutch for the evening.
(Or whatever your personal style works for you)
Work On Better Shoes
One of the best things about them is that they look casual and stylish simultaneously.
Boots are also great for colder days but can make your outfit look less put together.
So it's essential to choose classic styles in neutral colors that go with everything.
Comfortable shoes are simply just a must.
Keep This In Mind Moving Forward
Everyone over 50 has the same basic wardrobe.
You need the most basic things.
No matter your style or body type, you can always make a great outfit by putting together the same pieces of clothing.
(But don't let that stop you from experimenting!)
Don't be afraid to try new things, but keep your looks simple and use neutral colors.
So, you can add a little more style to the basics and make them look different every time.
Also, loose-fitting clothes are your best friend because they can hide a lot of sins, lumps, and bumps.
If a slim-fit T-shirt or top looks good on you, wear it with pride and pair it with other pieces that fit you better.
So, you can make a lot of fall or winter capsule wardrobes that will keep you warm without being too bulky.
Your Personal Style (Strengths And Weaknesses)
In terms of fashion. If you feel good about how you look, it's great to wear many different clothes.
If you feel like your clothes don't fit well or make you feel bad about yourself, choose outfits with easy-to-mix and match pieces.
This way, you can use the same pieces to make different outfits every day.
For example, you might build your capsule wardrobe around your favorite pair of jeans (or several pairs).
You can try new things, but keep the looks simple and easy to change.
As you learn more about your personal style and get used to the clothes in your closet, add a few pieces that might be outside of what you're used to.
You may have some favorite clothes from before you were 50, but you don't have to stop wearing them.
Just add something new, like a new bag or shoes, to make it feel modern and fresh.
If you might be starting from scratch with your wardrobe, take some time to find out what's in style right now.
Again, keep things simple while you try new things. If you don't feel confident, don't try out several trends at once.
