How to Declutter Your Bedroom (Finally Make It Feel Like a Place to Rest)

Bedrooms are often the easiest place to keep things we don't know what to do with such as clothes, papers, half-finished projects, you name it. 

However, there are simple things that you can easily do to declutter it.

Below, I’ll walk you through how to declutter your bedroom in a way that’s simple, doable, and (yes!) even kind of satisfying. 

But First, Why Should You Declutter Your Bedroom?

Well, your bedroom should feel like a peaceful place where you can rest, recharge, and escape the noise of the day, right?

But if your room is filled with clothes everywhere, random stuff on every surface, and piles of “I’ll deal with it later” items… 

It’s hard to truly relax.

A cluttered bedroom can mess with your sleep, make you feel more stressed, and even start your day on the wrong foot. And when the first thing you always see in the morning is a mess, it sets a chaotic tone for your day every single time.

But on the flip side, a clean bedroom makes it easier to fall asleep, focus, and feel more in control.

Now, if you’re feeling like your room’s getting out of hand or you just want to breathe easier when you walk in, you should definitely start decluttering your bedroom.

So, Where Should You Start?

You see, when clutter has been piling up for a long time, it can feel like you're staring at a huge mess and have no idea where to begin.

But here’s the good news… 

You don’t have to clean it all up in one day. And, you don’t even have to make it to the top today. The key is to start somewhere anywhere and let small wins build into bigger ones. Instead of thinking about the whole room, focus on one spot that’s been bugging you the most. 

That one area that makes you sigh every time you see it. Maybe it's your nightstand, buried under books, water bottles, old receipts, and things you meant to “put away later.” Or maybe it’s your closet, so packed with clothes you can barely close the doors—let alone find what you need in the morning. 

For others, it could be the bed itself, often hidden under a mountain of laundry, pillows, or things that don’t even belong there.

It doesn’t have to be the “right” spot, just pick one place and begin. More so, you don’t also need a fancy checklist or a perfectly mapped-out plan. What you just need is to take action somewhere within your home that feels manageable and meaningful to you.

And once you do? 

That small progress creates momentum. You’ll start to feel lighter, more motivated, and more in control. And what once felt impossible to begin will start to feel doable…  

Because hey, it is. 

But, What Are The Things That You Should Declutter?

You might be wondering, “What exactly counts as clutter?” The simple answer is… 

Anything that you don’t use, don’t love, or just doesn’t belong in your bedroom anymore.

That includes the obvious stuff like clothes that don’t fit, don’t feel good to wear, or that you always skip over when picking an outfit. If you haven’t worn it in over a year (and it’s not a special occasion item), chances are you won’t miss it if it’s gone.

Then there’s decor, maybe a picture frame you no longer like, or throw pillows that just take up space. If it doesn’t make your room feel calm and relaxing, then it might be time to say goodbye.

Additionally, don’t forget the old electronics that don’t work or that you never use anymore, things like tangled cords that go to who-knows-what, stacks of unread books, dried-out pens, or even half-burned candles. 

These things quietly steal space and energy without you even noticing.

And of course, there's paper clutter (i.e. receipts, old magazines, random notes, packaging, or mail) that ended up in your room “just for now” but never got moved again. 

Those piles grow fast, but the good news is, they’re also usually the quickest to clear.

And as you go through these stuff, pause every now and then and ask yourself:

  • Do I actually use this?
  • Do I really like it?
  • Would I buy this again if I saw it in a store today?

If the answer is no, or if something just makes you feel stressed, then it might be time to let it go. You don’t have to hold onto things out of guilt, habit, or the idea that you might need it someday.

Because remember, what you’re trying to do is you're making space for things that truly matter to you. And that’s always worth it.

How Do You Actually Do It?

Decluttering your bedroom isn’t about making it look like a magazine or some pins from Pinterest. It’s about making it feel better for YOU. (Not for someone else)

And to do that, you would break things into small, doable steps.

First off, you can start by clearing off surfaces like your nightstand, dresser, or even the floor next to your bed. Once those are cleared, it’ll be easier to see what you're working with. Next, go area by area. Open one drawer or pull out one basket. Then, sort through what’s in there and make decisions one item at a time. 

You don’t have to be perfect, just be honest. If something makes you feel weighed down, you probably don’t need it anymore.

Additionally, don’t forget to clean as you go. You can dust, wipe, or vacuum little sections as you clear them. It helps make the space feel fresh right away and keeps you motivated to keep going. Also, give everything you decide to keep a proper “home” within the room. When each thing has its spot, it’s easier to keep your room from getting messy again later.

Remember, you’re not just organizing your space, you're changing your habits, and that takes time.
