You’re not bad at decluttering. You’ve just never had a way to do it that fits how you actually live.
The dress has a story. The blazer from the job you retired from is still hanging there. The sweater your husband bought you in 1998 still sits in the closet because he was the one who picked it out.
And then there are the pieces you’ve kept just in case. The jeans for a body that might come back. The cardigan that was perfect for spring evenings, even though two springs have passed and you still haven’t worn it.
You’ve tried to deal with all of it before. Maybe more than once. But within a few weeks, the closet looked the way it did before you started.
It doesn’t help that some days your back is tight and your knees are tired. The thought of pulling everything out for a six-hour purge makes you want to lie down instead.
So you keep the door closed. And when friends drop by unannounced, you close it fast.
None of this is your fault. You just need a different way to do it.
The handbook gives me the confidence to have less.
I am now in my seventies. I have always loved clothes but never felt I had any particular style. Whenever I see help for my age, it usually shows loose tops over skinny trousers and that's just not me. With your help I'll be able to become current in a gentle way. The handbook gives me the confidence to have less, and to acknowledge that I don't need two or three of the same thing taking up space.— Andrea Walduck, 70s
Three things will be different.
The drawer will actually close.
No more pushing socks down to make room. No more pulling on the handle and watching it bounce back open.
Getting dressed will take a few minutes, not forty.
You'll reach for something, put it on, and walk out. The pile on the chair won't be part of the morning anymore.
The closet door will stay open when guests come.
You won't think twice about it. There won't be anything in there to hide.
That’s what’s on the other side of this. Not a perfect closet. But one that fits the woman you are NOW.

I built this handbook because I needed it first.
When my closet started getting out of hand a few years ago, the first thing I tried was organizing it.
I sorted by color. I bought the dividers. I refolded every sweater the way the videos online told me to. For a few days, it actually looked beautiful. And then, slowly, things started sliding back.
The hangers tangled. The piles returned. The drawer stopped closing. A month later, the closet looked pretty much the same as it did before. And for a long time I thought I was just bad at staying organized.
Eventually I realized I was trying to fix the wrong thing. Organizing only works when there’s actually room to organize. You have to clear out first. Then organize what’s left.
So I wrote down everything I wished I’d known when I started. Every question I should have been asking. Every drawer in what order. Every prompt for the pieces with stories. That became the Declutter Your Wardrobe Handbook.
This is the handbook I would have wanted to hand myself five years ago.

More from women who’ve worked through Alison’s approach.
I am 71 years old and lost about 250 lbs in the last 10 years to have knee replacement surgery. I hung on to my old clothes until they were falling off me. I am learning to look for pieces that are quality for the basis of my wardrobe. Right now my wardrobe consists of 2 pair good summer pants, 2 pair good winter pants, 2 good blouses, t-shirts, shorts, a summer sweater, a winter hoodie. These all fall within my color palette so they can be worn interchangeably.— Leslie Sorensen, 71
This handbook has given me back precious minutes in the morning and eliminated the stress of deciding what to wear.— Kirsten D.
