The other morning I reached into my linen closet for a clean towel, and three others came tumbling down on top of me.
I stood there in the hallway, arms full of towels I didn’t ask for, and I finally had to laugh.
Because it was just me and my husband in the house now. Two people. And somehow I had a closet packed so tight it fought back every time I opened the door.
So I did something I had never actually done. I pulled every towel out and counted them.
Twenty-four bath towels. For two people. (I checked twice, because I couldn’t believe it either.)
Then there were the hand towels, the washcloths, the beach towels from trips we took years ago, and a stack of sheets for beds that left the house when the kids did.
It was a lifetime of linens for a family that isn’t that size anymore.

Why Linens Multiply Without You Noticing
Here is the strange thing about towels and sheets. You almost never decide to buy a lot of them. They just gather.
A set here when there was a good sale. A gift set at Christmas. A fresh set of nice towels for the guest bath, which meant the old ones moved to the back of the closet instead of out the door.
Towels don’t wear out in a way you notice, either. A shirt gets a stain and you toss it. A towel just gets a little thinner and grayer each year, and you keep using it right alongside the new ones.
So the pile grows. Slowly, quietly, without you ever choosing it.
Sheets are their own story. When the kids grew up and moved out, they took some beds and left others behind. But I still had sheets for all of it. Twin sheets for a twin bed nobody sleeps in. A full set for a guest bed we swapped out years ago.
