For years, I tried to guess what my children would want from this house someday. I never once asked them.
I’d already learned the hard way that my kids didn’t want the good china or the boxes I had saved for them. My daughter was kind about it (she always is). But after that, I stopped bringing it up at all.
I think part of me was afraid of hearing “no” again.
Then one Sunday in September, all three of my kids came over for supper. The grandkids ran out to the backyard. My husband put on a second pot of coffee.
And I looked around my kitchen and thought, I’m 64. If I don’t ask them now, when will I?
So I asked. One at a time, after supper, with a cup of coffee and a little notebook.
What they told me surprised me, and it changed how I look at almost everything in this house. If you’ve ever wondered what kids want to inherit, I’m going to share exactly what mine said.
Why I Waited So Long to Ask
