There isn't a great time for getting ready for the holidays, so why not just do it in advance?
Today, I'll share my go-to holiday capsule wardrobe essentials for any holiday during the coldest season of the year, Winter!
With the intention of you getting ideas of your own after reading this.
(You're welcome.)
I've realized that choosing essentials is the key to dressing for any holiday during that time and keeping it into a somewhat manageable capsule wardrobe.
Let me know if you agree or disagree with my wardrobe essentials under the comments section below!
What is A Holiday Capsule Wardrobe?
A holiday capsule wardrobe basically is your go-to closet if you may for any holiday.
For this instance, It's going to be the winter season.
A holiday capsule wardrobe again compromises articles of clothing that are about 25 to 50 pieces that you love!
These pieces of clothing are both versatile and comfortable to wear during the cold season and won't go out of style.
(Of course, having your own style is a must as long as you love it!)
Why Do You Need It?
As all capsule wardrobes are concerned, you need it for these 3 important reasons.
It Saves You Money In The Long Run
Choosing only pieces of clothing that you love and limiting them to a few items will save you money.
How Allison, you may ask?
Simple.
A capsule wardrobe is all the clothing and accessories you will ever need for the holiday.
You won't need to have the urge to shop for more clothes because you have decided that it's time to limit your wardrobe to the essentials.
(And yes, just the essentials!)
More Time To Enjoy The Holidays
With your holiday capsule wardrobe set up. You have more time to enjoy that much-needed holiday season!
Gone are the times that you need to worry about picking up more clothes or what to wear.
Go spend time with family and friends (or yourself) and stop worrying about clothing.
Just simply wear them!
(Don't forget to mix and match of course.)
Maximize Your Wardrobe
Having a limited amount of clothing and accessories, it forces you in a way to think about new varieties in how to wear your clothes.
That's a good thing as you can explore what works and what doesn't.
Religiously practicing variety creates more opportunities to create more capsule wardrobe ideas!
Top 10 Holiday Capsule Wardrobe Essentials
Start off by looking for Hats or Beanies
Choosing the right headwear for Winter time is up to each person's preference, but a must-have all the same.
You don't want to go out during the winter without proper clothing as you'll not last long throughout the day.
(Not to mention feeling uncomfortable because of the cooler climate.)
I personally prefer to go for beanies.
Just because when I can remove them indoors, it will still let my hair look natural…and not look like I combed only the top of my head and forgot to do the rest.
As for colors, I lean on either black, white, or gray, as they can fit with any of my clothing options.
Choose Your Favorite Scarf
Scarves have always been a staple of clothing when it comes to the cold season.
Pair it with any winter clothing and it just works like magic and keeps you warm as well.
As for colors, I would recommend going with shades that work well with what you chose for your holiday capsule wardrobe.
I personally went with black, white, and gray…again.
Don't Forget Your Sweater
How would you keep yourself warm during the winter without having your beloved sweater?
Sweaters keep you warm and comfortable while giving you a chance to show off the versatility of your wardrobe by mixing other items of clothing.
While I was recently decluttering my clothes, I found my ‘favorite' Winter sweater that I hadn't worn for ages.
Now I can use it as an essential so as not to waste the opportunity to wear it again.
(And I really missed wearing it!)
Dress Coat For All Occassions
I can't stress enough that having a dress coat is essential for your holiday capsule wardrobe.
(Really, I can't!)
Having your go-to dress coat means that you can pull off any look for any occasion.
You can go out and just enjoy the winter season on any occasion without looking overdressed.
I would personally go for a black dress coat, a white sweater, black leggings, ankle-high winter boots, tech gloves, and a few accessories, and I'm all set for whatever I have to do for the holiday out!
A Casual Coat For Everyday Use
Having the right type of clothing for a specific occasion is a must in our society, and that goes without saying.
But what if you just don't know where you're going for the day?
A casual coat (I prefer a classic wool coat) is what you'll need.
From going to the mall, an event, or even doing groceries, A casual coat can work WONDERS with the right attire.
I personally prefer my classic wool coat because it just fits nicely with the rest of my capsule wardrobe essentials.
(It works great with my sweater too!)
Gloves That Fit You Well
Winter gloves can keep you from freezing over once you're out and about.
Different types of gloves are available for you to choose from and that's a great problem to have.
For this year, I went with tech gloves, specifically ones made from Isotoner, as it gives me access to my smartphone to converse with you guys in the comments section.
(Or to tell my husband I need him to pick up things in the grocery.)
Jeans That Compliment Your Look
A pair of jeans will work for any occasion…just don't choose tattered jeans or else get ready for cold spots on your body!
Denim jeans would be good as they typically keep you warm enough, especially if they are of high quality.
I personally use denim jeans as it has now become staple wear for me.
And if you don't know anything about me, I'm an advocate for anything denim.
Don't believe me? Check out my Fall capsule wardrobe, as I've incorporated it there as well!
Leggings For Those Lazy Days
Having a pair of leggings as an essential can elevate your wardrobe to having more options to create new styles with what you have.
Having a neutral color such as black can pair nicely with the rest of your holiday capsule wardrobe and wouldn't be bad for the overall look.
For my casual attire, I choose to use a beanie, scarf, sweater, leggings, gloves, and winter boots.
Simple, yet it makes me feel comfortable enough to go out for a cup of coffee with friends.
Plain or Colorful Socks That Matter
During the winter season, wearing socks should be part of everyone's attire regardless if you're going for a capsule wardrobe or not.
(For obvious reasons.)
You can go for plain colored socks or if you're willing to give color a chance, go for colorful pairs.
Colorful socks can be a fun way to introduce color into your attire and is a great conversation starter!
Your Go-To Winter Boots
Choosing the right winter boots for your holiday capsule wardrobe can be easy.
Choose a pair of boots that you love, preferably ones that can match your entire outfit, and just go for it!
I'm personally using a new pair of Sperry's lace-up winter boots given as a present to myself to try out this holiday season.
So far, I can't wait to try it out!
Quality Of Clothing (And How It Will Last For Years To Come)
Being picky about the type of clothing (especially quality) can determine just how long it will last.
Don't be cheap when it comes to the quality of the fabric that you choose because it usually means that you're getting exactly what you're paying for.
Here are some examples of fabric that you may want to look into.
Wool
Wool is a great choice for clothing.
It has air pockets in its fabric that can provide natural insulation for cooler weather.
Wool coats and jackets are a popular choice for most people because of that fact.
Suede
Suede is another lightweight fabric that can be used not only during the winter, but in other seasons as well.
I personally love creating outfits over this material because I wasn't a fan of this before.
Until I found one that I just simply fell in love with!
(So don't sleep on this type of quality clothing like I did for years)
Leather
Who doesn't love leather, right?
People wear it during every season regardless of the climate because of how popular it is.
But for the winter season? It just hits different.
It's water resistant and a natural windbreaker to fight off the cold breeze.
In my opinion, leather is the sturdiest of the fabric choices here since my leather jacket lasted way…way…way longer than the rest.
Cashmere
Ah, cashmere, softer than sheep's wool and is way warmer!
So many clothes work with cashmere, and that's why I included it in the list because of the potential it brings.
Cashmere is often associated with high fashion, but for the sake of winter clothing, it can keep your body warmer if you're sensitive to the elements.
Denim
I'll try not to be so biased with denim and just give you the facts here.
It's great for trapping heat that you NEED during the winter and its compactness compared to regular pants provides overall better protection.
(It doesn't hurt that it's a staple piece for any type of clothing as well!)
